Stars and Swirls Necklace

You know I love a challenge, right?  If I didn’t we wouldn’t have bought our 1970’s original condition home.

When I saw these metal twist beads, I wondered what you would use them for.  I pondered this for quite some time.  

Finally, I decided that using them as a focal point in a necklace would be a great place to start and so was born the Stars and Swirls Necklace.

This is a really easy piece to make but it packs a real punch. It sits quite high on the neck but you could easily make it longer by adding more of the 3mm bicones and black ball beads at the end.

Materials

Here’s what you’ll need to make this necklace:

• 35x10mm Metal Twist Beads x7
• 8mm Jet Crystal Glass Bicone x14
• 6mm Jet Crystal Glass Bicone x6
• 3mm Jet Crystal Glass Bicone x16
• 3mm Black Ball Beads x50
• 5mm Silver Beaded Rondelle x10
• Silver Grey Tiger Tail x60cm
• 1.5mm Black Crimp Beads x2
• Black Carlotte Clamp x2
• 18mm Black Toggle Clasp

Tools

• Mini Bead Stopper
• Chain nose pliers
• Flush Cutters

Instructions

Watch the video or read the instructions below.

Step 1

Place the bead stopper on one end of the Tiger Tail.

Step 2

Lay five of the Metal Twist Beads out on your mat and ensure that they are all facing the same way.

Step 3

Thread the centre portion on using the layout diagram below. Repeat until you have strung on five of the Metal Twist Beads, ensuring you have a 3mm ball bead on each end.

Thread on one extra 8mm bicone on each end.

Step 4

Next thread a Metal Twist bead on each end. Twist the Tiger Tail around the Twist bead so that the Tiger Tail runs through the centre of the bead.

Step 5

Thread on 10 of the 3mm black balls and push them inside the Metal Twist bead.

Repeat for the other side.

Step 6

String on one 8mm bicone.

Then repeat 1x 3mm ball, 1x 6mm bicone three times.

Repeat for the other side.

Step 7

Add the 3mm bicone and 3mm balls alternatively until you have eight of each bead. Finish with a ball.

Repeat for the other side.

Step 8

Add the Clasp

Thread on the Carlotte Clamp, Crimp bead and one side of the Toggle Clasp. Then thread the Tiger Tail back down through the Crimp bead, the clamp and three beads.

Pull the Tiger Tail tight enough to bring the beads close but still allow the toggle clasp to move around.

Ensure the crimp bead is sitting inside the clamp. Using your chain nose pliers, squeeze the crimp until it is flat.

Using the chain nose pliers, carefully squeeze the clamp closed around the crimp bead. It should still be round so that it looks a bit like a bead.

Hook the loop of the clamp through the loop of the toggle clasp and squeeze closed. You may need to bend the loop to the right shape to get it through.

Trim off the excess Tiger Tail as close as you can to the beads.

Ensuring that there is no space between the beads, repeat for the other side of the necklace, adding the other piece of the toggle clasp. You should aim to have some movement allowance but no visible spaces between beads.
